Tafea Province is the southernmost jewel of Vanuatu, often referred to as the "Land of Fire and Tradition." It’s a place where the earth literally breathes and the culture remains as rugged and authentic as the landscape.
If you’re looking for a destination that feels like a journey back in time, here is why Tafea belongs at the top of your list.
The name TAFEA is actually an acronym for the five main islands that make up the province. Each has its own distinct personality:
Tanna: Home to the world’s most accessible active volcano, Mt. Yasur, and the famous Giant Banyan trees.
Aniwa: A low-lying coral atoll known for its stunning turquoise lagoons and orange groves.
Futuna: A rugged, uplifted coral island often called the "Gateway to the Sunrise."
Erromango: Known as the "Martyr’s Island," it's a hiker's paradise filled with sandalwood forests and sea caves.
Aneityum: The southernmost inhabited island, featuring the pristine "Mystery Island" cruise port and ancient petroglyphs.
Standing on the rim of an erupting volcano is a life-changing experience. As the sun sets, the "Lighthouse of the Pacific" puts on a pyrotechnic show of molten lava and thunderous booms that you can feel in your chest.
Tafea is the heart of Kastom (traditional law and culture). In Tanna’s highlands, you can visit villages where life remains largely unchanged for centuries—where locals wear traditional attire, practice ancient ceremonies, and live in harmony with the land.
An uninhabited islet that looks like a postcard come to life. With no electricity, no phones, and world-class snorkeling right off the white sandy beach, it is the definition of "getting away from it all."
Getting There: Air Vanuatu operates regular flights from Port Vila to Tanna (approx. 40 minutes). Other islands are accessible via smaller charter flights or cargo ships.
What to Pack: Sturdy walking shoes are a must for volcanic ash and jungle trails. Bring a flashlight (torch) and plenty of insect repellent.
Respect: Always ask for permission before taking photos of locals and remember that most land is custom-owned.
Fun Fact: Tanna is home to the famous "John Frum" movement, one of the world's most intriguing cargo cults, centered around the village of Sulphur Bay.
