Penama Province: The Island of Long Life and Legends
If Sanma is the playground and Malampa is the soul, Penama is the mystical cradle of Vanuatu. Its name is a combination of its three lush, volcanic islands: Pentecost, Ambae, and Maewo.
This province is home to some of the most famous cultural traditions in the world and landscapes that look like they were pulled straight from an adventure novel.

Pentecost: Globally famous for the Nagol (Land Diving), the ancient precursor to modern bungee jumping. It is a long, narrow island with rugged mountains and cascading waterfalls.

Ambae: A massive shield volcano rising from the sea. Its centerpiece is Lake Vui, a crater lake that has made international headlines for its volcanic activity. Ambae is often associated with "Long Life" and traditional weaving.

Maewo: Known as the "Island of Water." It receives the highest rainfall in Vanuatu, resulting in endless rivers, spectacular waterfalls, and the best kava in the country.

1. The Nagol / Land Diving (Pentecost)
Between April and June, men on South Pentecost build towering wooden structures (up to 30 meters high). With only vines tied to their ankles, they leap from the platforms, aiming to touch the ground with their shoulders to ensure a bountiful yam harvest. It is a breathtaking display of courage and faith.
2. The Cascades of Maewo
Because Maewo is so lush, it is covered in natural limestone terraces and waterfalls. The Moonlight Cascades are a hidden gem where you can swim in tiered pools surrounded by ancient ferns. It feels like a private Eden.
3. Traditional Weaving (Ambae)
Ambae is famous for its intricate red-dyed mats (bwenvenue). These are not just crafts; they are a form of traditional currency used for marriages, funerals, and settling disputes. The craftsmanship is incredibly detailed and passed down through generations of women.

Maewo is unique because of its water management. Ancestral stone irrigation systems are still used today to grow water taro. Navigating the island often involves following river paths and discovering "hot springs" that bubble up near the coast.

Getting There: Small airfields at Lonorore and Sara (Pentecost), Walaha and Longana (Ambae), and Maewo. Flights are smaller and less frequent than those to Santo or Tanna, so book ahead!

Did you know? Legend says the Land Diving began with a woman escaping her husband. She jumped from a tree with vines tied to her feet; he jumped without them and... well, the men have been jumping with vines ever since to prove their bravery.
