Sanma Province: The Adventure Capital of Vanuatu

If Shefa is the heart and Malampa is the soul, Sanma is the undisputed playground. Taking its name from its two primary landmasses—Santo (Espiritu Santo) and Malo—this province is a paradise of white sands, deep blue holes, and world-class history.

Espiritu Santo, the largest island in Vanuatu, is the crown jewel here. It’s a place where the jungle meets the sea in the most spectacular way possible.

🏝️ The Giants of Sanma

  • Espiritu Santo: Often just called "Santo." It’s a land of extremes, featuring the country's highest peaks (like Mt. Tabwemasana) and its most famous beaches.

  • Malo: Separated from Santo by a narrow channel, Malo is famous for its cocoa and coffee plantations and its ancient archaeological sites (Lapita pottery).

  • Aore & Ratua: Smaller boutique islands just off the coast of Luganville, perfect for luxury escapes and horseback riding.

✨ Highlights You Can't Miss

1. Champagne Beach

Consistently ranked among the best beaches in the world. Its name comes from the volcanic gas that bubbles up through the sand at low tide, making the water fizz like a glass of bubbly. The sand is powdery white, and the water is a vivid, glowing turquoise.

2. The Blue Holes

Santo is famous for its natural limestone springs. Rainwater filters through the island’s interior and emerges in deep, crystal-clear pools of sapphire blue.

  • Riri Blue Hole: Access it by a traditional outrigger canoe down a jungle river.

  • Matevulu Blue Hole: Famous for its massive banyan tree and rope swing.

3. The SS President Coolidge

For divers, this is the Holy Grail. A luxury ocean liner turned WWII troopship that sank just off the coast. It is one of the largest and most accessible shipwrecks in the world. You can see everything from chandeliers and "The Lady" (a famous porcelain statue) to trucks and guns still sitting in the holds.

4. Millennium Cave

The ultimate jungle trek. It involves hiking through tropical rainforest, scrambling over boulders in a massive cave, and then floating down a river canyon between towering rock walls. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s an unforgettable adrenaline rush.

⚓ Luganville: The Second City

Luganville is the capital of Sanma and the second-largest town in Vanuatu. It has a gritty, frontier-town charm and is the base for all your adventures.

  • WWII History: The town was a massive US military base during WWII (over 100,000 soldiers were stationed here). You can still see "Quonset huts" and visit Million Dollar Point, where the US military dumped tons of equipment into the ocean at the end of the war.
